Eroğlu : “Greek Cypriots use Turkish vessels as an excuse”
President Derviş Eroğlu said that they have reached a stage of bargaining at which it will become clear during the negotiations whether a solution will be reached or not and added that, however, the Greek Cypriots use Turkish vessels presence in the Mediterranean as an excuse in order to avoid this.
Stressing that the proposal of the UN Secretary General’s Special Advisor on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide regarding withdrawal of Turkey’s vessels in 3 months is a proposal which was made instinctively, Eroğlu said that this is an issue of prestige and he conveyed to Eide that Turkey’s prestige is higher than the prestige of South Cyprus. Underlining that Turkish vessels’ presence in the Mediterranean is not an illegal and unjust move, Eroğlu said that this is not a reason to escape from the negotiation table. Emphasizing that in order to come back to the negotiation table, the Greek Cypriot Administration demands from Turkey not only to withdraw her vessels but also to make a commitment for not entering the same area again, Eroğlu said that seismic exploration vessels make research with the permission and on behalf of the TRNC government and if drilling will be done in future, it will be on behalf of the TRNC government.
