An Evening at The Punjab, Lapta

By Margaret Sheard

Although Lapta is a fair distance from home, I have on many occasions had a meal at The Punjab and never been disappointed.  The Punjab logorestaurant is managed by Hussain Zulfiqar Malik, the brother of Riaz who can be found at Jashan’s in Karaoğlanoğlu.   I have met Hussain on many occasions when he has been representing Near East Bank, his daytime profession, and can only marvel at the amount of work this young man does every day.

We sat and chatted with Hussain for a while before having a meal and he told me that he came to North Cyprus in 2003 and studied at GAU until 2006 then movin3.g on to EMU in Famagusta for a further 2 years to study for his MBA, where he graduated.

The Punjab, which is situated on the main road in Lapta just before the “strip” (from Girne) is open in the evenings and for Sunday lunch, and as the summer is approaching, the restaurant will be open through the day as well.

The outside terrace is a lovely area, away from the road and very pleasant in the summer with shrubs and trees and a lovely sea view.  There is also a large and comfortable inside area where people can 1.dine during the winter months, this has beautiful silk ornamental drapes and many pictures of India/Pakistan.  There is plenty of parking space in the private car park.   The Friends Line Dancers use the inside area for their practice sessions twice weekly and have been doing so for quite a long time.

On Sundays, the Punjab serve a traditional Sunday Lunch menu, Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding, Roast Potatoes 9.etc. plus other choices so the British expatriates can still have a taste of home.  I have tried the Sunday lunch in the past and it is delicious, so why bother cooking at home when you can enjoy a traditional Sunday lunch in lovely surroundings.

For people who like some entertainment with their meal, they can enjoy Andrew Sings….. every Friday and on Wednesdays Katie B entertains.  The entertainment evenings are very busy so it is wise to book well advance by calling the restaurant on 0542 850 0294…Hussain also said The Punjab will be open on Christmas Day 2014 when there will be a traditional Christmas lunch with all the trimmings and entertainment.

We later sat down to enjoy a lovely meal starting with Poppadoms, then Starters of a Mixed Plate and Prawn Cocktail and Main Courses of Vegetable Korma and Chicken Dhansak accompanied by lovely garlic naan bread.  As usual we were very full by the time we had finished.  An excellent meal from the extensive menu which offers both Indian and European cuisine, something to suit all palates.

Our compliments to the chef Hamid and also thank you for the excellent service from the waiters Tahir and Abdul and of course not forgetting Hussain who circulates amongst the customers to ensure that everything is ok.   One very nice touch when dining at the Punjab is that the waiters wear traditional costume and this goes a long way to creating an authentic atmosphere.
