What A Great Day It Was!

By Chris Elliott

Last Sunday was a busy day but I made time to go along to meet many old friends at the ESENTEPE FUN, RUN AND RAMBLE 2014 and the weather was glorious and the atmosphere was just amazing with so many people arriving to watch the series of events. It was just fun, fun and more fun on this day.

Of course I was delighted to catch up with all my friends and supporters of the organising committee plus I spotted Maggie White of ADA TV getting ready for the off and not far away in the crowd was Andrew Tate and Glen King of Andrew Sings….. who, as ardent charity supporters, had come along to feel a little pain in their efforts at taking part.

Bravo guys, you and so many hundreds of other folk as well as children had the same idea including Aşkin, Aşgül and their children Kerem and Kaan Ibrahim who all participated in memory of Aşgül’s father Alper Shevket who died of cancer two years ago.

So big were the crowds of excited people waiting to take part I apologise to those people I did not spot and speak with. Perhaps the one person making everyone take note was Mr Knight the Knight Templar who was directing the race starting procedures with his trusty sword and if that was not enough he set off on the ramble clad in his traditional attire including his helmet in the baking sun. Now that’s true commitment to a cause.

From those early years from wheTulipsn I first came to North Cyprus, on Sunday I met again Burcu and Şukru Karakaya the directors of Carrington Estates and long term sponsor of this event and also met special guests MP Kutlu Evren plus the Esentepe Mayor, Cemali Engin.

Our dear friend Raziye Kocaismail the founder of Help Those with Cancer Association (Tulips) was there and she was so happy that so many Tulips supporters had come by many coaches or cars to Esentepe from all over Northern Cyprus to take part or just be there to support others and this was a fine example how everybody can come together in a common cause. Fighting Back Against Cancer for TULIPS.

What more can I say, pictures tell a thousand words and I took many of those and share them with you below in the slideshows, so I leave it to the organising committee to make their own assessment of what was a great day.

Raising money for TULIPS (Help Those With Cancer Association)

IT is being hailed as a great success by the organisers as the total raised so far has already exceeded last year’s total of TL42,528.05.

With over 450 competitors, including several dogs, three-legged walkers and a donkey, the Esentepe Fun, Run and Ramble 2014 attracted the largest field of participants since its inception in 2011.

Art Watson, Chairman of the organising committee said: “We are still waiting for some sponsorship money to come in and we have 4 more social events before the end of the month so we should be in a position to announce the final total sometime in early May.

Obviously, I want to thank all our sponsors, large or small, the participants and the committee for their untiring work over the last four months. It all came together remarkably well and I believe people enjoyed the event”.

He further added: “We were delighted to see so many children taking part and this year, for the first time, Esentepe School entered and ran alongside children from the English School of Kyrenia and Girne American University.”

The winners were: 2km – Rueben Park; 5km – Nick Grant; 8kmn – Osman Atakan and the Fancy Dress was won by Kade Fletcher as Spiderman. A special certificate was awarded to Kai Fletcher who has taken part in every Fun Run and for the first time ran the 8km.
