The RBL Theatre Players

 Dick Whittington and his Cat

by Ralph Kratzer

Horst Gutowski, Treasurer of The Foreign Residents in the TRNC (TFR), forwarded me a few pictures of a pantomime performance presented in the last week of November by the RBL Theatre Players.

He also told me that for the first time the several performances took place at the Cultural Centre in Kyrenia/Girne. There were a total of five evening events as well as 3 in the afternoons for children – all of them sold out.

Pantomime_18Again this year there had been great stage sets and costumes, as well as wonderful actors.  Impressive were the exceptionally good voices of the members of the ensemble, and what is particularly noteworthy is because they all are amateur actors.

The original story of “Dick Whittington and his Cat” was based on the real life of Richard Whittington, the third son of Sir William Whittington of Gloucester, who lived in the 14thCentury.

Unlike his pantomime character “Dick”, Richard was not poor but a wealthy textile tradesman in London, later in his life getting the title of Sheriff before becoming Lord Mayor.

Unfortunately, I wasn´t present at any of the performances, but looking at the pictures I’m going to plan having this on my schedule for the next time.
