A ceremony was held yesterday to commemorate the 126 people who were killed by the Greek Cypriot terrorist organization EOKA on 14 August 1974 in the villages of Muratağa, Sandallar and Atlılar.

Now let´s come to the story of Pepe from Spain and after that to Purdey and Cookie from North Cyprus!
Pepe recently travelled with Animalcouriers from Spain to the UK. He was rescued by Ciara from life as a street dog and has now settled in to his new home in Scotland.
Ciara wrote to tell Animalcouriers how well Pepe is doing:
“I just wanted to say a final thank you for everything! Without Animalcouriers it would have been financially impossible for me to import Pepe, and I couldn’t have rescued him. So it’s thanks to you that I can send you some pictures of him enjoying his new life on the west coast of Scotland — a far cry from starving on the streets of Valencia! He absolutely adores the beach (and his tennis ball, as you can see!), and has adopted the new Boxer pup in the house as a little brother.
I will highly recommend you to anyone in the future, as the standard of care is beyond the call of duty, including your fantastic blog, all with an extremely reasonable price tag. I wish you all the best for the future, and would like to congratulate you on the wonderful work you do!”

Purdey and Cookie are back with Lynn and Bob
Purdey and Cookie are two of the dogs from North Cyprus who accompanied us on our first abortive attempt to enter Turkey.
Because of timing issues, they couldn’t join our second successful attempt. Instead they flew back to the UK and have been home boarding with Animalcouriers’ Lynn while their new home was being prepared.
When Lynn and Bob arrived to collect their dogs, they were full of stories about all the hassles that so often go with moving house: no water, no phone signal and so on. Even so, they’re glad to be back in the UK and of course, Purdey and Cookie went potty when they saw them.
PRESIDENT EROĞLU: ‘ESSENTIAL TO MAKE A PERMANENT, VIABLE AND JUST SOLUTION’
Having made a speech at the 39th anniversary of the Serdarlı’s Liberation Ceremony, President Derviş Eroğlu said that it would be easy to have a solution if all the requested concessions were made and added: ‘It’s essential to make a permanent, viable and just solution. We are in favour of this kind of a solution.’

Mentioning that a solution will be possible if the Greek Cypriots make up their minds and come to ‘reason and peace’ Eroğlu said: ‘However according to their intensified demands and steps taken lately, it does not seem hopeful.’
Eroğlu has indicated that Alexander Downer, the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus, has prepared a 77-page document on the compromised issues and Anastasiadis has not given a positive response to it.
Having emphasized that the current borders are consequences of the second phase of the Cyprus Peace Operation started on 14 August 1974, Eroğlu said’ We acquired a piece of land which we live on in security today thanks to the second phase of the Cyprus Peace Operation started on 14th August and we built our own State step by step with our self determination right.’
Having remarked that the biggest Turkish canton, Serdarlı was liberated first, followed by Mağusa and Lefke, Eroğlu said: ‘The reasons that 39 years after, we live here, in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus safely and are able to present our projects hopefully are our resistance, struggle, martyrs and protecting our national case with our motherland Turkey.’
PRESIDENT EROĞLU: “OUR ATTITUDE AT THE NEGOTIATION TABLE IS PEACEFUL AND REALISTIC AND PROPOSES A VIABLE SOLUTION”
The 39th anniversary of liberation of Gazimağusa was celebrated with ceremonies at Polat Paşa Avenue and Zafer Monument in Gazimağusa. At the ceremony, TRNC President Dr. Derviş Eroğlu, emphasized that Turkish Cypriots do not think to give up self-determination, bi-zonality and full and effective guarantee of Turkey, and said: “This thought will not harm the Greek Cypriot people”.
Pointing out that the demands of the Turkish Cypriots on a solution are reasonable, the President said: “the attitude we put forth on the negotiation table is peaceful, realistic and envisages a viable solution”.
Addressing the Greek Cypriot side, Eroğlu said: “The result obtained from the negotiations in 4 years is obvious. Let’s continue the negotiations with the intention of an agreement. Let’s solve the Cyprus problem with an agreement. Let’s make Cyprus an island of peace and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean”.
Eroğlu emphasized that if the equality of Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots is accepted, the solution will not be difficult and said: ‘We have the same security rights as you do. It is our right to demand prosperity as much as you do. Let’s sit around the negotiation table in October and sign an agreement in 2014.’
Many high government officials, military and political representatives, and civil representatives attended the ceremony at Polat Paşa Boulevard.
In his speech at the ceremony, Eroğlu said Mağusa was not given the title ‘Gazi’ (war veteran) for nothing, the city showed a legendary resistance based on self sacrifice and devotion to the land, the walls could not be climbed over and it could not be captured.
Touching upon the Cyprus issue President Derviş Eroğlu said the solution should have already been signed but after the elections in the South, in February, the Greek Cypriot leader has not yet returned to the negotiation table.
Having underlined that the Greek Cypriot side does not accept the geography after the peace operation, Eroğlu said in brief: ‘Their aim is to spoil and end the bi-zonality’. They are against the self determination of the Turkish Cypriot community. They do not accept the full and effective guarantee of our motherland Turkey and made it an official assembly decision.’
KAYALP
During the ceremony, the mayor of Gazimağusa, Oktay Kayalp delivered a speech and said that after the rough days the people of Gazimağusa achieved the liberation on 15th August 1974 and were given the title ‘Gazi.’ (War veteran).
Kayalp remarked that the most important symbols of the existence of Turkish Cypriots in the world are the biggest sea port and the 2 universities which are located in Gazimağusa. Highlighting the fast development of Gazimağusa, Kayalp said that until the first half of the 1990’s Gazimağusa had the characteristics of a town but now it is a world city with rooted and globalized institutions. The stage we reached now is the result of faith and hard work.
BEYAZOĞLU
Can Beyazoğlu from the 4th Infantry Regiment Commandership said at the ceremony that the liberation of Gazimağusa was a symbol of the struggle of Turkish Cypriot and Turkish soldiers shoulder to shoulder and things they can achieve.
GREAT INTEREST IN TRNC AND GAU STAND AT JORDAN EDUCATION FAIR
It is reported that Girne American University (GAU)’s academic programs and international campuses have attracted attention at the biggest education fair in Jordan, which is one of the leading countries in the Middle East and Arab World.
According to the information given by GAU, TRNC brochures and presentations about the promotion of the country’s tourism given to the visitors were watched with interest by Jordanian and Middle Eastern visitors.
At the Al-Awa’l Initiative Education Fair which is organized in Amman, the capital of Jordan, on 13th and 14th August, academic programs of Marine, Engineering, Architecture, Business Management, Banking, Finance and many other faculties and international campuses of GAU were introduced.

There are many village festivals throughout North Cyprus, all of which are well worth attending and at this time of the year Ozanköy is proud to hold its 5th Carob Festival / Pekmez Festival.
The festivities will be in the area of the local sports club and will be held on 23rd, 24th and 25th August from around 7pm throughout the evening.
There will be plenty to see, stalls selling local produce and handicrafts and also a lot of music and dancing.

EROĞLU: ‘TIME HAS COME FOR AN EARLY RESOLUTION TO THE CYPRUS DISPUTE’
Having made a speech during the ceremony at the Muratağa-Sandallar Martyrdom ceremony, President Derviş Eroğlu has remarked that there are 2 different peoples and States in Cyprus which have different languages, religion and geography and said :‘the Turkish Cypriot people will not give up ruling themselves with their established government, democratic system, political parties and civil organizations.’

If the Greek Cypriot side keeps its promise and does not attempt to twist the facts, the negotiations will be launched, said Eroğlu and added that the Turkish Cypriot side has a clear manner about the issue and the time has come for an early resolution to the Cyprus dispute.
President Eroğlu has emphasized that Turkish Cypriots have good intentions and they are in favour of peace and a solution.
Calling for lifting the embargoes and isolations on the Turkish Cypriots President Eroğlu said: ‘At the presence of our martyrs, I would like to call the United Nations, European Union and related third world countries to stop allowing the Greek Cypriot side to grasp our rights and keep us under the isolations and embargoes.’
EROĞLU RECEIVED DELEGATION OF CONFEDERATIONS COMMUNITY OF TURKEY
President Derviş Eroğlu has received the Chairman of the Confederations Community of Turkey, Nezaket Emine Atasoy and the accompanying delegation.
According to the statement released by the Presidency Press Office, in his speech Eroğlu has stated his appreciation to the Confederations Community of Turkey due to its volunteer lobby on behalf of the TRNC and said ‘Facts told on behalf of the TRNC makes us pleased.’
Eroğlu has said that the TRNC has difficulties in order to globalize due to embargoes and because of these embargoes, foreign investors are prevented to come to the country.
Having emphasized that the Turkish Cypriot people and Turkey have already proven that they are in favour of a solution in the island, President Derviş Eroğlu said that the Greek Cypriot side acts unwillingly.
For these reasons isolations must be lifted as soon as possible, said Eroğlu and added that the initiators of the incidents in Cyprus are now a member of the European Union.
FOREIGN AFFAIRS MINISTER ERK RECEIVED GERMANY HONORARY CONSUL ÖZDEMİR

Foreign Affairs Minister, Kutlay Erk has received the TRNC Werl, Germany, Honorary Consul, Özdemir.
According to the statement by the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Undersecretary Hilmi Akil also attended the meeting which lasted more than one hour.
According to the statement, during the meeting Kandemir Özdemir gave information about the honorary consular services and views were exchanged on the possible works for the next period.
NEU IS AMONG TOP 500 UNIVERSITIES IN 23 THOUSAND UNIVERSITIES AROUND THE WORLD IN TERMS OF ‘GLOBAL ACCESS TO ACADEMIC KNOWLEDGE’
Near East University (NEU) is reported to have been among the list of top 500 universities from 23 thousand universities around the world in terms of ‘global access to academic knowledge’.
According to the written statement received from the NEU, the NEU has been ranked in the 475th position in the list of the universities on the website www.webometrics.info.
The NEU has also the 2122nd position in the ‘Excellence Ranking’ and the 749th position in the ‘Europe Ranking’.
In the statement, it has been reminded that the NEU has recently won the ‘Best University Award in the Golden Category of 2013’ in Switzerland, ‘Golden Award for Quality & Business Prestige’ in Rome, ‘2013 International Arch of Europe Award’ in Frankfurt, ‘Best University Hospital Award’ in Holland, ‘14th of the Robotic Football Competition’ and said that NEU has finished its development and now ascends to the top, having the honour of being a pioneer to the other developing universities.
