Ziya Azazi – Whirling Master
I have for a long time found the Whirling Dervishes fascinating to watch and earlier in the year I went to see a performance of 3 Whirling Dervishes at the Bedesten in Lefkoşa. This was a brilliant show and I was enthralled at the discipline and dedication of these young men.
I have recently seen a very different type of performance by dancer and choreographer Ziya Azazi, who bases his contemporary modern dance on the traditional dance of the Whirling Dervishes. To see this amazing and beautiful performance click here
I sat spellbound watching this dancer perform a dance based on the Whirling Dervishes which was so different from the basic dance but still retained the spiritual act of whirling.
Since watching the performance referred to above I have watched another called Ember (trapped in fire ). This is a spectacular routine which I personally found a little slow in the build-up but the ending is absolutely mind-blowing and well worth the wait. To see this dance click here
Ziya Azazi was born in 1969 in Antakya, Turkey and since 1994 has been based in Vienna, Austria and holds Austrian citizenship. In 1999, Ziya began a self-study of the traditional dance of the Whirling Dervishes and has choreographed many interpretations on this theme. He has performed in many countries world-wide, including North Cyprus, and if ever this dancer comes to North Cyprus again to do a performance I will be sure to go and see him as this would be such a wonderful experience so I hope one day he will choose to come here again to enrapture the people of North Cyprus.
