REFORM Peterborough recently hosted a dynamic branch meeting in Peterborough on 28th January 2026. The event brought together many members, all united by a shared commitment to defending democratic rights in the city.

Council Debate Sparks Public Outcry

Second Peterborough Council meeting debating May Elections

The meeting followed significant news from Peterborough City Council, which had convened a second session to discuss the upcoming local elections scheduled for May. During a heated cabinet debate, members of the public voiced their concerns, declaring, “Our democratic rights are being denied.” Security staff intervened, silencing the protests. Ultimately, the council voted 28 to 18 against a Conservative motion to send a letter to the Secretary of State requesting that the elections proceed. This decision became the focal point of the evening’s discussion.

Reform UK Launches Legal Challenge

Despite the Labour-led council’s move to ask the Government to cancel Peterborough’s May elections, a growing backlash is underway. Reform UK has responded by launching a judicial review, aiming to legally challenge any cancellation of local elections by the Government.

Peterborough Chairman, Dr. Tom Rogers said, “The outcome should be known after a High Court hearing on 19th/20th February. The delay of the elections is far from a foregone conclusion—we are challenging it, are confident of winning, and must be prepared for the elections to go ahead—and for victory.”
