Greek Cypriots assault Turkish Cypriots by burning their flag

Prime Minister Üstel: “Burning our flag is an assault on the Turkish Cypriot People.”

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel stated that while the 42nd anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on November 15 was being celebrated in a peaceful manner, the aggressive behaviour displayed by Greek Cypriot youths carrying Greek flags at border crossings, directed both at the border and the Turkish Cypriot people, could not be overlooked.

Emphasizing that any viable solution in Cyprus must be based on two States, Prime Minister Üstel remarked, “Even if we do not reach a negotiated settlement, we will continue to live and exist on the island of Cyprus as two neighbouring states with good relations. This is our sincere belief.”

In his statement, Prime Minister Üstel continued, “The attitude of those who send Greek Cypriot youths to our borders with Greek flags and incite them to burn the TRNC flag constitutes an insult and an attack on the Turkish Cypriot people. A flag is the symbol of honour for a state and for its people. Those who burn or provoke the burning of the TRNC flag should understand this, and if they do not know, they must learn it.”
