Fiakas play comes to Gazimagusa on 16th September
Written in 1870 by the Istanbul writer Dimosthenis Misitzis, Fiakas is one of the most popular genres of traditional theatre.
Charilaos Plutidis or Charalambos Petaloudis or Fiacas was living parasitic in debt in Istanbul in 1870. Graceful and cunning, he behaves like the rich boy of a good family; he romantically makes the naïve Evanthia fall in love with him and looks forward to her dowry.
Evanthia, who is fascinated by the novels of the period and has a strong imagination, becomes an easy victim of it. With maid Yannis, flirty Froso and Casamia on the verge of revealing Fiacas’ true situation, Fiakas decides to impersonate the “disguise” German baron, and the swirling intrigue comes to a head…
He writes at a time when different religions and different languages embraced and all peoples lived in peace in multicultural Istanbul; liars; while satirizing fraudsters, he strongly criticizes the excesses of Istanbul society.
With a contemporary direction by director Alexia Papalazzarou, the play connects with today’s liars, corrupt politicians, and swindlers. Blended with live music and dance, the play offers the audience an enjoyable 75-minute performance…
