Presidential Spokesman Barış Burcu: “The continuation of the UNFICYP is not sustainable and healthy”
The Presidential Spokesman Barış Burcu stressed that the continuation of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus under the same conditions after 55 years is not a sustainable and healthy situation.
Stating that the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus and the extension of its mandate required the consent of all parties to the dispute as in the whole world as stated in the UN document, Brahimi Report, Burcu stated that this reality and the demands of the Turkish Cypriot side which was not included in the report is a serious shortcoming.
Burcu evaluated the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ report which was distributed to UN Security Council members regarding the extension of the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).
Pointing out that open ended processes which are not result oriented have come to an end in this report and that negotiations should be considered in a foreseeable horizon; Burcu added that this has coincided with President Mustafa Akıncı’s determination that he revealed in this direction all along.
Dr. Fazil Küçük is remembered
The late Leader of the Turkish Cypriot People’s struggle for freedom and existence, Dr. Fazıl Küçük, is being remembered today on the 35th anniversary of his death. The first ceremony was organized at Dr. Fazıl Küçük’s mausoleum at Anıttepe at 10:27 today (15th January).
The ceremony started with President Mustafa Akıncı laying the wreath at the mausoleum. The flag was lowered to half-mast. The memorial book was also signed at the ceremony. The ceremony was ended with the speech of President Mustafa Akıncı.
The second ceremony for the late leader was held at the Atatürk Cultural Centre in Lefkoşa.
An exhibition entitled “Dr. Fazıl Küçük and National Struggle” was also opened at the Atatürk Cultural Centre at the Near East University.
