Erdoğan: “Our determination is continuing about the Cyprus issue”
Speaking at a panel held at the Brookings Institute, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said: “Our determination is continuing to reach a fair and permanent solution as a motherland and a guarantor country on the Cyprus issue.
Our priority is to achieve a comprehensive settlement on the Cyprus issue and guarantee the political equality and legitimate rights of the Turkish Cypriots. We hope that the current positive atmosphere will continue by reinitiating the stalled negotiations in May and welcome the opportunity as well.
Call for equality from Beşparmak Think Tank Group
Making evaluations about the Cyprus issue, Beşparmak Think Tank Group indicated that the EU institutions and officials should realise the political equality of both sides in the EU not only so-called but also in practice and should consider both sides accordingly.
In the statement it was expressed that “the Greek Cypriot side take advantage of so-called EU membership status on behalf of the whole Island and tries to make meaningless the agreed solution parameters under the European solution. The EU and the UN officials also provide opportunities in this regard and this situation is disquieting.”
In the statement it was also stated that pushing back the requirements of political equality and bi-zonality and highlighting principles that render meaningless the parameters of the European Union will cause danger for a settlement in Cyprus and may also cause wasting the existing negotiation process which is described as the last chance.
