 RBL January Quiz Night

Eighty ‘Quizzers’ at Fun Fundraiser at The Deniz Kizi Hotel

Jan Marsh, Events Secretary for The Royal British Legion, Kyrenia Branch was an impressive debut Quiz Master for the first RBL Quiz Night of the year held at the DenizKizi Hotel recently.   Jan had never organised a quiz before, yet despite her lack of previous experience, the event proved to be huge success, with a total of eighty people attending, divided into sixteen teams.

The Quiz Result was a close run thing:

First Place – The Scrambled Eggs 72 points10. Cyprus regiment badge

Second –The Space Cadets 71points

Third – The Blues 68 points

Card Game Winner: Patti-Foch-Gatrell

However, the main result was the sum raised for the RBL Charity, which supports injured or damaged British Forces Personnel, or their dependents should they need it.  Two hundred (200) TL was raised from the Quiz and one hundred and twenty five (125) TL from the card game; the winning team also generously donated fifty (50) TL from their 4 Cyprus Reg photo parade .1942winnings, making a total of three hundred and seventy five (375) TL from the evening.

A modest Jan Marsh commented. “The evening was a big learning curve for me as it was the first time I had tried my hand at creating a quiz. I learned a lot, but I am planning to bring in a more experienced Quiz Master for the next quiz in February at The Deniz Kizi.Pete Letherbridge will ensure that everyone has a fun and challenging evening, so that I, as Events Secretary,can focus on other key issues on the night.“Look out in the local Press for the date of our February Quiz.” AddedJan.   “Entry for the Quiz is 5TL per person plus 10TL for the mid-quiz supper; Burger or Chicken Curry.

As well as former or Serving British Military Personnel, anyone can join the Royal BritishLegion and qualify for a range of benefits, as well as enjoying various Social Events. All proceeds from RBL activity are used for the Legion’s work, which includes keeping an eye on elderly or frail members, which involves,in North Cyprus, old soldiers who served in the Cyprus Regiment of the British Army during World War 2, between 1939 and 1945. It is estimated that c.30,000 Cypriots, from all communities across the island served with The Regiment, which was disbanded in 1950.
