A Journey to Antarctica with the Werrington Friendship Club

After living in a new town for just over a year, I found myself facing the familiar challenges of settling in—finding my way around, discovering local events, and, most importantly, meeting new people and making friends. That’s why I was delighted to be introduced to the Werrington Friendship Club, which meets every Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at Sutton Court on Skaters Way, PE4 6GC, conveniently located with direct access to the main car park.

On my first visit, I had the pleasure of attending a guest speaker session featuring Dave Pinion, who shared his fascinating journey to Antarctica. With the aid of a captivating slideshow, Dave took us on an incredible adventure, describing the long voyage by boat and occasional helicopter flights. We were awestruck by the breathtaking views of the islands, the vast landmass, and the endless ice, as well as the remarkable variety of birds and sea creatures he encountered.

Despite the grandeur of the experience, we were brought back to reality when Dave visited the historic sites of legendary Antarctic explorers—temporary homes that have been frozen in time on the icy landscape. For those local readers currently feeling the chill and perhaps experiencing some aches and pains, you might be interested in the next meeting on January 27th, which will feature a talk on alleviating arthritis. And of course, you can look forward to warming up with a nice cup of tea or coffee and some biscuits.
