Cyprus Negotiations

Talks to restart after summer break

President Mustafa Akıncı and the Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiadis will be coming together to resume comprehensive negotiations aimed at settling the Cyprus Problem following a month’s break.

The meeting which will take place at the Good Offices Mission in the UN Controlled Buffer Zone will start at 9:30am.

The negotiators of the two leaders Özdil Nami and Andreas Mavroyannis met daily last week as part of preparations for tomorrow’s meeting which will focus primarily on the property issue.

The two negotiators will be meeting again today for a final preparatory meeting at 4pm.

The UN Special Advisor Espen Barth Eide is expected to attend the meeting.

President Mustafa Akıncı and the Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiadis had agreed at their last meeting on the 27th of July on the creation of an independent property commission made up of an equal number of Turkish and Greek Cypriots to handle the thorny issue under a solution.

They both agreed that the individual’s right to property would be respected and people would be offered different options to make sure this right was fulfilled.

These different choices would include compensation, exchange and reinstatement and that the exercise of any such choice would be subject to agreed criteria.
