Akar: “Taking a step back is out of the question”
Turkish National Defence Minister Hulusi Akar stated that taking a step back from the rights of the people of the TRNC and the Republic of Turkey in the Aegean and the Mediterranean is out of the question.
In his speech at an event in Doha, Qatar’s capital, Akar said that the efforts to protect the rights arising from international law and agreements not only in the country and in the borders but also in the Aegean, Mediterranean and Cyprus continue. Akar also indicated that they will continue to do their utmost in order to protect the rights in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEC).
Stating that it is not possible to make concessions on the rights of our country and our nation, Akar said that they are in favour of good neighbourly relations, peace, friendship, and cooperation. Akar added: “Besides, taking a step back from the rights of the people of the TRNC and the Republic of Turkey in the Aegean and the Mediterranean is out of the question. We have taken every precaution we can in order to protect the rights of our country and our nation. We do not allow any fait accompli. We have already announced that no solution has a chance to survive that is not supported by the Republic of Turkey and the TRNC
15 more martyrs were buried in Muratağa-Sandallar Martyrdom
15 more martyrs, who were massacred in Muratağa on August 14, 1974, were buried in Muratağa-Sandallar Martyrdom following identification by the Committee on Missing Persons.
Except for 79-year-old Hasan Hüseyin, all of the other 14 martyrs were women and children.
The martyrs were brought to the Muratağa-Sandallar Martyrdom and were then buried with a military ceremony.
Speaking at the ceremony, President of the Martyrs’ Families and War Veterans Association, Gürsel Benan stated that the Turkish Cypriot people will never forget the massacre of 126 innocent and defenceless people, 44 years ago on 14 August 1974, from a 26-day old baby to a 95-year-old.
National Struggle and Martyrs commemorated with ceremonies
Commemoration ceremonies will be held in Lefkoşa and districts due to 21-25 December Struggle and Martyrs Week.
Commemorative events began with a speech by Infantry Captain Murat Osma from the TRNC Security Forces Command (GKK) on Bayrak Radio today. The first ceremony was held at the Lefkoşa Martyrs Monument at 09.30. The Commemoration programme for the Martyrs was held at Atatürk Culture Centre at 09.50.
