Akıncı: “The Greek Cypriot Leadership must abandon the understanding of usurping common wealth with unilateral initiatives”

Stating that the two communities that share the island are face to face with a great historical responsibility towards future generations, as well as the whole region and the world, President Akıncı stressed that the natural resources belonging to the two communities should be used in such a way as to increase the welfare of these two communities.

President Mustafa Akıncı made a speech at the 9th Bosphorus Summit entitled “Sustaining Peace and Development for All” organized by the International Cooperation Platform in Istanbul.

Stating that the words “peace” and “development” which constitute the basic framework of this year’s summit, defined two vital needs for the world, Akıncı said: “People, communities and countries no doubt want to live a safe and prosperous life. Unfortunately, most regions of the world’s geography and most of the world’s population do not have this chance”.

According to the report published by the Integrated Regional Information Networks at the beginning of 2018, Akıncı said that war conditions prevailed in more than 40 regions of the world and the number of people affected by hot conflicts has doubled over the past decade.

Pointing to the fact that recent hydrocarbon resources which have been discovered in the Eastern Mediterranean region must be used and considered wisely so that this will be an opportunity for establishing the peace-development relationship both in Cyprus and in the region, Akıncı said : “Everyone will benefit from a vision that foresees the joint use of the natural resources and thus an economic cooperation environment in which no one will lose may be created and then this economic partnership may turn into the key for peace in the region.”

Akıncı stated that the Greek Cypriot leadership has to give up the wrong attitude they have followed up to now and said: “The Greek Cypriot Leadership must abandon the understanding of usurping common wealth with unilateral initiatives”

Erhürman meets with Turkish Cypriots living in Istanbul

Prime Minister Tufan Erhürman met with Turkish Cypriots living in Istanbul last night (26th November). During the meeting, Erhürman made a request to the Turkish Cypriots to give much more cooperation.

Erhürman travelled to Istanbul to attend the 9th Bosphorus Summit and met with hundreds of Turkish Cypriots living in Istanbul, he spoke with them and answered their questions.

Talking about the Cyprus problem, economic situation of the country, universities and the production in the country as well, Prime Minister Erhürman said that Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiades wished to make the Turkish Cypriots a minority in Cyprus with his proposal of a “loose federation”. Erhürman stressed that as with the Greek Cypriot people, there should be active participation of the Turkish Cypriot people in respect of decisions, and the natural resources around the island of Cyprus should be shared. “If they are shared, there will be wealth otherwise there will be tension in Cyprus” Erhürman added.

Erhürman pointed out that they will continue to speak with a language of ‘peace’ but they will never disclaim their rights.

Furthermore, informing about the import-export volume of the TRNC, the Prime Minister said that the only country which recognizes the TRNC and does not impose an embargo is Turkey, that’s why exports to Turkey should be increased. Erhürman also pointed out the importance of international contacts.
