Akıncı: “What really matters is to derive lessons from the past and leave a safe future for next generations”
12 more martyrs from a total of 89 who were buried in mass graves were laid to rest at the Muratağa-Sandallar Cemetery with a military ceremony after identification by the Committee on Missing Persons.
With yesterday’s burials (6th September), the number of martyrs who have been identified and buried among the martyrs of Muratağa and Sandallar has reached 20.
In his speech at the ceremony President Mustafa Akıncı reminded that 126 people, the majority of which were women and children, were barbarously and mercilessly killed in Muratağa, Sandallar and Atlılar and this can only be called a “massacre”.
Furthermore, Akıncı stressed that it was important to derive lessons from the past and to leave a safe future for the next generations, adding that Turkish Cypriots who have rights on this island as much as Greek Cypriots should seek a safer world in peace while building their future.
Burcu: “It is unacceptable that the Dutch and French Foreign Ministers did not meet with the Turkish Cypriot side”
Presidential Spokesman Barış Burcu criticised the Dutch and French Foreign Ministers who have refused to meet with the Turkish Cypriot side during their latest visit to the island.
In his statement, Burcu said: “The refusal of the Dutch and French Foreign Ministers to meet with Turkish Cypriot officials after bowing down to the Greek Cypriot side’s pressure is unacceptable, particularly at a time when the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was assessing the future of the Cyprus problem as well as the UN peacekeeping force on the island.”
“The Netherlands and France are not just two ordinary countries. They are both important members of the EU. Moreover, France is also a permanent member of the UN Security Council.”
Burcu pointed out that such one-sided contacts carried out with the Greek Cypriot side by EU member countries, who express support to settlement efforts at every opportunity, did not contribute in any way to the solution of the Cyprus problem.
“Such actions only serve to further encourage the Greek Cypriot side, which is not ready to share power or wealth with Turkish Cypriots, to continue its intransigence on the Cyprus problem” Burcu added.
Martyr Allahverdi Kılıç to be commemorated
Infantry soldier Allahverdi Kılıç who became a martyr as a result of the attack of Greek Cypriot soldiers while he was doing his military service will be commemorated at the 22nd Anniversary of his death tomorrow (8th September).
2nd International Vounous Terracotta Symposium to start
The opening of 2nd International Vounous Terracotta Symposium will be held today (7th
September). The official opening ceremony will be made by President Mustafa Akıncı.
A total of 93 artists and scientists from 9 countries; United States of America, Ireland, Slovakia, Latvia, Tunisia, Libya, Turkey, South Cyprus and TRNC will attend the symposium which will be open for visitors until 14th September.
Turkish Cypriot rally drivers to attend World Rally Championship
Rally Turkey which is the 10th leg of the World Rally Championship is going to be held between 13-16 September, 2018 in Marmaris.
The North Cyprus Touring and Automobile Association will participate in the rally which will be held in Turkey for the first time since 2010 and 70 rally cars will participate.
