By Margaret Sheard ….

Many people will be aware of The Abnormals and the many quirky shows they have performed over the years in aid of Help Those with Cancer Association (Tulips).

They have now branched out with a first ever serious musical production of The Beatles – A Hard Day’s Night, which will be performed at the Esentepe Culture Centre on Sunday 16th September starting at 7pm.

The script for the show was written by Charlie Bell back in 2007.  He saw an article in the Glasgow Herald and that same evening he went home and wrote his script – A Hard Day’s Night. The Project was set to be first shown in Inverness,  after the theatre there was refurbished and Sir Cameron McIntosh sought an original show.  Unfortunately due to legalities with the music score it was not possible for this musical production to take place, however, with Charlie now in North Cyprus it was decided to go ahead and treat the public to an exceptionally entertaining show, which is dedicated to the memory of George Harrison.

The Esentepe Mayor, Cemal Erdogan, has kindly provided the Esentepe Theatre for the performance, and it has also been sponsored by Salih Kayim-Cyprus Construction, Califoria Restaurant Chains, Magic Touch Printers who have supplied the programmes and The DVD Shop, Catalkoy who have assisted with the music backing.

We went along to the theatre on Sunday 2nd September to see a rehearsal taking place and not wanting to give too much away, this is basically the theme of the show :

Dan and Maggie are a working class couple who dote on their daughter Molly.  Molly adores The Beatles and gets a ticket for their concert where she meets her match from heaven, the loveable rogue Des.

The cast have been rehearsing for the past few weeks and we were very impressed with their rehearsal performance and of course the music most of us know by the Beatles really had my feet tapping.  It is going to be an excellent show and well worth seeing.   Tickets are by a donation of 12TL and are available by contacting Charlie Bell on 0533 886 4657 or  email :  geezashout@yahoo.co.uk  The event will be in aid of Help Those with Cancer Association (Tulips).

The show will run for approximately 1½ hours and there will be an interval during which there will be food (kebabs) and a bar outside the theatre which is to be supplied by Ali of Windy Hill.   Also during the interval there will be an auction of a painting of The Beatles by a local artist, this can be seen in advance at Bottles Bar in Esentepe prior to the auction.

What better than after a relaxing Sunday morning and afternoon, going to the Esentepe Theatre to see a fantastic musical production, join in and sing if you wish, and at the same time help a local cancer charity.    The theatre seats around 200 people and The Abnormals hope they will see all of the seats filled for this very special evening.

One of the new features of cyprusscene.com is video reviews, and Chris went along with his video camera to talk to Charlie Bell and take some sneak footage of The Abnormals’ rehearsal.
