By Richard Beale………………….

Forget “No wheels on my wagon” it’s Christmas time again as Esentepe were in a very festive mood giving away two gift goals to further derail their promotion hopes.

Sunday 22 April 2018 : K-Pet League 1 : Bostancı Bağcil Stadi

The nightmare continues and once more Esentepe tasted defeat, with Girne Halk Evi winning 4-0 against Lapta, Esentepe are just about clinging on to second place with their fingertips. I cannot believe I am writing about another Esentepe defeat as especially in the first half it was a much improved performance of late. But you cannot afford to gift two goals to the opposition and it proved too much of a mountain in the end to climb. The two errors cost them 3 points and they have only gained 1 out of a possible 15 points, hardly promotion form.

Gönyeli were yesterday crowned Champions, who will accompany them into the Super League is anyone’s guess at this stage. With 2 matches left to play, it will between Esentepe and Girne Halk Evi, it will go down to wire. Esentepe have only themselves to blame as promotion a month ago looked a certainty.

On a beautiful warm April afternoon a very disappointing crowd were present at the compact Bostancı Bağcil Stadium. Maybe 50-60 people were in attendance, possibly around 30 from Esentepe.

Esentepe hit the Bostancı woodwork after only 5 minutes play, from an Ismail Aslan corner which was cleared back to him, he managed to pick out Başak at the far post, the Esentepe Captain got in a shot that hit the Bostancı crossbar and went over.

3 minutes later it was the Bostancı left hand post that was struck when Ahmet tried his luck from just outside the box with a snap shot.

Esentepe had another good chance in the 22nd minute following another Ismail corner, which was partially cleared back to the midfielder who whipped in a cross to the far post, where Şahin sliced his shot just wide of the post.

Against the run of play Bostancı took the lead in the 32nd minute when a long kick from AHMET ZAİFOĞLU, was dropped by the Esentepe keeper Kemal as he tried to recover he only succeeded in fumbling the ball over the line. 1-0.

This goal lifted Bostancı and they almost increased their lead in the 37th minute, when Armstrong cut in from the right and crossed to the far post where Mehmet fired against the Esentepe crossbar.

Straight away Esentepe countered the attack led by Ismail Aslan in the 38th minute who went down the left, before crossing to BAŞAK who stooped low to head past Emre, it was no more than Esentepe deserved. HALF TIME SCORE : 1-1

Esentepe suffered a hammer blow in the 49th minute when they gave away another soft goal courtesy of an own goal from NERSIN. A free kick from Andreas was back headed by Armstrong over Kemal’s head who had called for the ball, only for Nersin trying to clear the ball only succeeded in slicing it into his own net. 2-1

Another quick breakaway saw Armstrong bearing down on goal, Kemal reacted quickly coming off his line and managed to deflect the Bostancı players shot onto the outside of the post for a corner.

The rest of the half saw Esentepe with plenty of possession, but they didn’t really create any clear cut chances and were susceptible to Bostancı quick breakaways. Bostancı were playing 5 at the back with Fırtına sweeping up at the back. Desperate Esentepe pushed defender Şahin up into the attack but Bostancı defence stood firm.

With 7 minutes of injury time being played and Esentepe pushing men forward that left them hopelessly exposed at the back. Inevitably they were caught by a counter attack when Hüseyin Sarro quickly broke down the right before crossing to the near post for CEVDET to head home. FULL TIME SCORE : 3-1

SUMMING UP : Watching Esentepe at the moment should carry a Government Health warning, as it’s not good for the heart or blood pressure. Esentepe can’t buy a win at the moment or even a point. It was an improved performance and there was no doubting the effort and commitment, but still no points to show for it.

For Esentepe Yakup again put in a good shift before being surprisingly replaced in the 60th minute. ISMAIL UÇAR put in a good wholehearted performance, firstly at left back and then when he was pushed into midfield later on.
