Girne Municipality has opened two new parks with the Sanat (Art) Park in Ozanköy and the “8th March” Park on Bellapais Road with two separate ceremonies.

Representatives of the foreign community in the country participated in the opening ceremony, with the Mayor of Girne, Nidai Güngördü, members of the Municipal Council,  muhtars, regional school teachers and students and visiting representatives for the 20th International 23rd April Children’s Festival.

At the opening of the parks, Girne Mayor Nidai Güngördü said that after May 2010, there was a serious concentration in settlement and population of people in Girne, and that the need for green areas and playgrounds in the city has increased. He stated that after July 2014 there were only 10 children’s parks and now there are more than 20.

Güngördü reminded that members of the jury who came to the International Olive Cartoon Competition in 2014 had planted olive saplings at the place where the Art Park was located, and that the sculpture “Peace” made by the Italian Sculptor Antonella Tiozzo in the 1st International Sculpture Symposium, organized by the Municipality, was placed in this park. After his speech, Güngördü planted olive seedlings representing peace with the children of the countries participating in the 20th International International Children’s Festival on April 23rd.

Speaking at the opening of the 8th March Park, Mayor Güngördü said that the park next to Sercem Houses has a seating area, children’s playground and outdoor sports equipment. Güngördü emphasized the need to increase such areas in the city.
