There is great interest in the Girne Municipality Animal Shelter and since 7th November 2017 when the shelter was opened 18 dogs have been given homes. 

The shelter complies with the country’s Animal and Welfare Law and attracts much attention.  Regional schools and citizens have made visits to the shelter and donated food. Students have also planted saplings at the shelter. There are about 30 dogs currently at the shelter the number will be increased in stages.

The Animal Shelter is open from 10am to 1pm on weekdays and from 11am to 2pm at weekends. The cafeteria at the shelter will be open from 8am to 4pm. Those who want to contact the staff at the shelter can call 0533 839 3838.

Girne Mayor Nidai Güngördü, said that with the cafeteria and children’s playground at the shelter, children can spend time with their parents while at the same time being part of an activity centre where they will be interested in animals and love them. Nidai Güngördü stated that they are launching an awareness campaign with the slogan “Purchasing, Ownership” and stated that everyone can adopt dogs from the shelter for free. Güngördü thanked sensitive citizens by emphasizing the importance of re-homing 18 dogs in the short time of 4 months.
