On Thursday, 15th March, Mary Watson, Sue Steel and Kate Bell went to BRTK to do a radio interview with Denise Phillips and a Cup of Conversation with Can Gazi.

This was to be a special day as it was Mary’s 70th birthday and Denise Phillips’ birthday too.  Something extra special was to take place and all were in the know except Can Gazi.

The Carrington Shield was born to be awarded to the person or persons, who, in the opinion of the EFRAR committee, made the most outstanding contribution to EFRAR and who best displayed the ethos of the Fun Run.

The first recipients were Alex Kennedy and (posthumously) George Roper who were the founders of the Esentepe Fun Run, as it was known in the early days. Since then it has been awarded to Kai Fletcher and the Abnormals to name but a few.

It was a unanimous committee decision this year to award the Carrington Shield to Can Gazi of Bayrak International for his unending promotion of EFRAR, for taking part, with his family, in all but one of the Fun Runs since it began in 2011 and latterly for being our co-host and interpreter for the day.

Mary Watson commented: “Can is truly a worthy winner and was presented with the award by Mary Watson, Sue Steel and Kate Bell when they appeared on his Cup of Conversation TV programme at Bayrak International studios on 15th March.  Can was totally shocked but delighted to accept the award and became quite emotional, especially as his parents, wife and many co-workers were in on the surprise and took time to come into the studio to watch the presentation.

It is great to be able to reward Can for all his support over the years. He is such an ambassador for EFRAR and we look forward to seeing him and his family at the next Fun Run on Sunday 15th April”
