The Turkish Cypriot side has taken back the map which had been presented at the Conference on Cyprus as part of the negotiations on the issue of territory.

The map, which was originally presented to the UN, was withdrawn at the request of President Mustafa Akıncı.

Both the Turkish Cypriot and the Greek Cypriot sides had prepared maps within the framework of the Conference on Cyprus as part of talks on the issue of territory. The UN had locked the maps away at UN Headquarters in Geneva.

After a declaration by the Greek Cypriot side that the Conference on Cyprus had ended in failure, the Greek Cypriots announced that they had withdrawn all proposals made during the conference.

In response, President Mustafa Akıncı informed the UN of his wish to withdraw the Turkish Cypriots’ map which was locked up in a safe in UN Headquarters in Geneva, and requested its return. Following his request, Head of the Office of the Special Advisor to the UN Secretary-General Sergiy Illarianov personally delivered the map to President Akıncı last December.

“Mr. Illarianov picked up the map from Geneva and delivered it personally to President Mustafa Akıncı in December in the presence of the negotiating team. So, there are currently no proposals on territorial adjustments on the table,” said Spokesperson Barış Burcu.  Burcu also recalled the fact that the negotiations are based on the principle that nothing is agreed until everything is agreed.
