National Unity Party (UBP) leader and Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün yesterday handed back the duty of forming a government to President Mustafa Akıncı after being unable to form a workable majority.

Following Özgürgün’s decision, President Mustafa Akıncı received the leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Tufan Erhürman and handed him the task of forming a new government.

Noting that a four-way coalition by the CTP, People’s Party (HP), Democratic Party (DP), and Communal Democracy Party (TDP) can be expected due to ongoing talks that have been carried out by these parties, President Akıncı requested the formation of a new government as soon as possible in order to address the many problems that require urgent solutions in the country.

President Akıncı also advised the coalition partners to work in solidarity rather than compete with one another.

CTP leader Tufan Erhürman stated that he and his coalition partners aimed to establish an equalitarian, libertarian and democratic government which serves society as a whole, and provides the necessary services deserved by the Turkish Cypriot people, underpinned by the rule of law.
