By Margaret Sheard …

We were recently invited to join others at the Etel Winery in Ilgaz for a talk about wine.

It is hoped to make this a monthly event when people can go along to the Winery and learn all about wine and its origins.

Maor Friedman, the General Manager, welcomed the visitors and introduced his Marketing and Sales Manager, Natalie Haigh, who proceeded to give an interesting talk with a slideshow about the origins of wine.  There were one or two questions to the audience of where it is thought wine originated, the answer was China and there were one or two other surprising facts which emerged from the slideshow and Natalie’s questions.

At the end of the talk Maor was presented with a plaque and certificate by Özgűr Ayata, President of the Cyprus Bartenders Club.

This was the first time I had been to the Winery and found it very impressive with the huge stainless steel vats and other wine making equipment.   Outside we could see the progress of the new buildings which will eventually form the complex of the Etel Winery and Gillham Boutique Hotel which will have 31 luxurious suites for holidaymakers, or those locals who want a change of scene, and the vast donums of vines as far as the eye could see.    Being set high in the mountain area of Ilgaz this is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the scenery, of course with a nice glass of wine.

Our visit, being in January, was not perhaps the best time of the year weather-wise and we look forward to visiting again when we can enjoy looking around on a sunny day.
