I have recently noticed postings on the social media encouraging table tennis players to join with others to promote this very popular sport in North Cyprus and so decided to follow it up by contacting Hugh O’Neill who is working towards hopefully forming a Table Tennis League.
Hugh, an Irishman from Lurgan, is also known as a popular entertainer around the area and he lived in Turkey before coming to settle in North Cyprus.
This is what Hugh has told me about this new venture.
“The Nomads-Cyprus are a bunch of table tennis lovers who meet on a Wednesday, 7pm, at Leo’s Bar in Ozankoy. Our intention is to form a league with 8 players per team. I have two other bars interested already and they are getting organized, these are in Esentepe and Karsiyaka. We are hoping for teams to pop up in all areas and anyone can contact me and I can help them directly how to set up their team. Email: inchequin@hotmail.com.
I began this in Turkey nine years ago with six players. When I left last April there were three divisions and 500 active members playing in the league. All teams must have a bar as their home.
It will be very social as well as competitive. People who have only played a little before are welcome as well as experienced players. I will form a B league so everyone gets a nice game against people of their own standard”.
