By Engin Dervişağa…….
I am delighted together with my colleague Qossay Eleyan to bring you our interesting report on “Discovering North Cyprus” from the The Great Hamam or Grand Turkish Bath in Lefkosa.
On the site of the bath, the Lusignan church of St. George of the Latins was constructed from 1306 to 1309 but this was damaged by flood water from the Pedieos River which flowed in through the city walls.
The building was rebuilt as a Turkish bath between 1571 and 1590 during the first years of the Ottoman rule in the island. During the Ottoman period, it was a popular social center where women socialized and exchanged news.
This show will be transmitted on BRT2 on Monday 8th January at 19.00pm and repeated on Thursday 11th January at 19.50pm. This programme was edited with Turkish subtitles by Kut Adali
