North Cyprus Football : New Göçmenköy Coach Starts With A Win

By Richard Beale……………

NEW COACH OFF TOO WINNING WAYS

Result : GÖÇMENKÖY İYSK 1 ESENTEPE 0.

Saturday 28 October : K-Pet League 1 : Venue : Göçmenköy Stadı.

Göçmenköy who sacked Coach Erman Çelik in the week got off to a winning start under his replacement Kemal Yakudoğlu. The only goal of generally a poor match was scored in the 59th minute by Arda Sözcü.

I was shocked to see when I arrived at the Stadium, what was a building site with rollers and diggers working on a non existent playing surface. The pitch is having synthetic grass installed but wont be ready until January 2018. Instead Gocmenkoy uprooted their metal stand and resited it on an academy pitch some 100 yards from the Stadium. Changing rooms, refreshments and toilets were in use at the old Stadium. The playing surface on the academy pitch was a “little moth eaten” but it turned out to be satisfactory, abet with a high bounce.

Work in progress on the “old pitch” and Göçmenköy portable metal stand.

What was not satisfactory was the performance of Esentepe who produced one of their worse efforts for quite a while.

In a poor match, Esentepe had their best spell in the first half with Hasan sent in a 35 yard free kick, which cannoned off the Göçmenköy crossbar.

34 mins : A long free kick from Muhammed into the area, seemed to present no danger until Okan in the home goal came out to claim it, missed it, the ball fell to a surprised Ahmet who headed just wide.

37 mins : Esentepe’s Eser and Turan both had shots in quick succession charged down by Göçmenköy defenders, the final effort from Turan in a good position went wide.

There was very little goalmouth action with Kemal in the Esentepe goal having only one shot to deal with. HALF TIME : 0-0.

Esentepe Coach Davut Kansu had seen enough and made 2 changes during the break. Withdrawing full backs Muhammed and Ismail and replacing them with Emre and Yakup.

However these changes failed to have any affect on Esentepe who continued to look “sluggish” and bereft of ideas.

59 mins the tedium and boredom was lifted when Göçmenköy scored Esentepe being caught out by a swift counter attack. Eser had a free kick easily saved by Okan who immediately switched the ball to Rifat on the left and with Emre out of position he sent a perfect ball to the dangerous ARDA. The winger cut inside and beat Kemal with an angled drive which crept just inside the far post. 1-0.

Esentepe replaced tall defender Onur with Captain Başak after 60 minutes.

Esentepe seemed to be at sixes and sevens with now potentially 5 strikers on the pitch, but they seemed confused and didn’t know what their role was or where to play.

Midfielder Hüseyin was now being used as a centre back and Göçmenköy should have made the game safe when they missed two golden opportunities.

In the 61st minute a low cross from Sabri eluded a final touch required by a Göçmenköy player.

Then in the 65th minute Arda sent over a cross, Sabri knocked it down to Suat who looked certain to score but shot wide.

82 mins ; Esentepe hit the Göçmenköy bar again but also nearly conceded a goal in a de jar vu situation. Firstly from a Yakup corner, headed on by Eser, Başak at the far post sent a downward header which bounced onto the crossbar, the ball was cleared to the left.Defender Rifat fastening onto it in a flash, with Esentepe players trying to get back, the defender went all the way into the area forcing a smart diving save from Kemal.

Başak had one more chance for Esentepe but fired over the bar. FULL TIME : 1-0.

SUMMING UP : Not a lot to sum up Esentepe were poor, with respect to Göçmenköy we should be beating teams of this calibre. We just did not turn up,in the second half we lost our shape completely and had no system what so ever. Five centre forwards had no service and our lack of a creative midfielder is becoming evident.

Too many players were off their game, I felt that Ahmet produced a useful performances and Nersin was Esentepe best player. Again he looked calm and assured in defence though his distribution of the ball sometimes leaves a lot to desire. In truth apart from hitting the crossbar twice Okan in the home goal had little to do, apart from collecting crosses into his box. Coach Davut Kansu has lots of work to do on the training field.

Encouraging start for Göçmenköy new Coach Kemal. His team worked hard for him and were difficult to break down. Defenders Cemal, Umut and Rifat gave little opportunity to Esentepe forwards. Winger and scorer Arda was a good pressure relief outlet for them.
