The missing martyr Halil Ziya, who disappeared in Bahçeler village in Larnaca on the 17 May 1964, was buried at Mormenekşe Cemetery with a military ceremony following funeral prayers at Mormenekşe Mosque yesterday (31st October). Ziya’s remains were found by the Committee on Missing Persons.

The Committee aims to determine the identities of missing persons who died in conflicts between Turkish and Greek Cypriots in Cyprus between 1963-1964 and also in 1974. The Missing Persons Committee has worked on the island for 10 years, giving comfort to the bereaved families of individuals who went missing.

Many Turkish Cypriots lost their lives and many went missing as a result of the armed attacks, massacres, and genocide of the Greek Cypriots against the Turkish Cypriots, with the support of the then military junta in Greece between 1963-1974.

The Committee on Missing Persons has now found a total of 1209 of 2002 missing persons since its excavation projects began.

A minute’s silence was observed at the military ceremony. The flag wrapped over the coffin of martyr Halil Ziya was later delivered to his daughter Nurten Öztürk.
