The new Ladies cricket team Doğanköy Dollies dominated their Creditwest TRNC league game against the Girne Girlies at the Pia Bella Stadium last Saturday 21st October.
The Girlies opened with Gloria Garcia and Annicell Garcia, who only scored 5 runs in their first two overs, but managed to recover finally scoring 20. Next in was Lynn Holman and debutante Ann McLaughlin who initially did well adding 14 runs in their first over, but looking to further accelerate the scoring rate lost wickets, amongst which was the catch of the day when Holman fiercely off drove Liz Turner into the fast reacting hands of Steph Routledge. Each dismissal cost -5 runs and resulted in them failing to add to their total in their remaining 3 overs. The final pair worked hard although runs were hard to come by and the team finished their innings on 47 with the wickets being shared by Routledge, Turner and Sandford.
Steph Routledge who top scored with 17 and Liz Turner opened the Dollies reply, steadily building a total of 20. In came Sarah Sandford and Rannveig Ystaas who removed any doubt as to who would win adding a controlled 23 with some delightful shots and losing no wickets. Girne’s captain Gloria Garcia tried lifting her team, but Linda Hurley took control and offered no chances as she made a well-crafted 11, bringing her team to 85.
Afterwards, Doğanköy Dollies captain Sarah Sandford said she was delighted, if a little surprised how her team had played, particularly pleasing was new girl Liz Turner taking a couple wickets in her first game.
Umpire Ian Fell told us, having seen the players improve over the months, the result makes the league wide open, as the Lapta Lassies could easily beat the Dollies in the next match in a couple weeks’ time.
The next coaching session is 11am 28th October at the Pia Bella Stadium, then continues every week. Please come along, no experience or equipment is needed and you can call Gina on 0533 8332069 for more information.
