Readers’ Mail
The first in a series of reports from Kim Betts

Last week (2nd October – 8th October) was a very busy week for KAR staff, supporters and volunteers. They are used to being busy with KAR animals and the work that comes with them, but last week saw lots of human “busyness”!!

It began on Monday 2nd October with a special visitor to the KAR Rescue Centre – Steve Goward. Steve was in Cyprus to attend the International Companion Animal Welfare Conference, which was being held for the 1st time in Cyprus.

A group of KAR staff and volunteers were also attending the conference, along with delegates from all over the world (more details later). A visit to the KAR Rescue Centre had been organised by Dogs Trust (International) for Steve and they arranged for him to travel from South Cyprus to the TRNC to meet personally with some of the staff, volunteers and dogs at KAR.

Steve is an internationally renowned expert in canine behaviour and training and has presented case studies, training programs and spoken many times at conferences world wide. His particular field of interest is in helping dogs who are struggling in a shelter environment and then, for the lucky ones, once they go to a new home.

Steve Goward talking to staff

Whilst at the KAR Rescue Centre, he spoke with staff and volunteers about some of their dogs and helped with ideas on how to help them with their behaviour problems/issues. He gave particular insights into why certain dogs were behaving in a particular manner and helped staff and volunteers to devise ways to help the dogs. Centre life is not the ideal life for dogs, but for everyone involved in dog welfare in Rescue Centres, it is hugely important to try and ensure that while they are in the Rescue Centre that everything is done to try and make the dogs happy.

Steve and the KAR staff and volunteers all had that same aim.

KAR would like to thank Steve for spending time with KAR and for sharing his expertise – it will benefit all of the dogs, now and in the future, who come into KAR.

Kyrenia Animal Rescue rely solely on donations for funding, please help us to help the animals of Northern Cyprus .

Adopt, Volunteer, Feed, Sponsor, Donate, Love – our animals want all of these but would be happy with just one of them
