I am delighted together with my colleague Qossay Eleyan to bring you an interesting report on “Discovering North Cyprus” about the Dervish Pasha Mansion which is a historical mansion and ethnographic museum in the Arabahmet quarter of Lefkosa.

The current mansion was built on the site of an earlier Gothic building and its front door bears the date of 1801 so this may be the construction date of the building. It was repaired in 1869 and belonged at the end of the 19th century to Hacı Ahmet Derviş Efendi, a wealthy Turkish Cypriot who owned large swathes of land outside the walled city of Nicosia.

In 1979, the mansion was in the danger of collapse and was purchased by the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus in 1981 and following renovation was opened to visitors as an ethnographic museum on 21st March 1988 and contains many historical artefacts related to past Cypriots and their lifestyles.

  1. Hello Gentlemen, Engin Dervisaga and your colleague Qossay Elegan, I love your Historical venture, especially when you roamed the streets with your web cam, not every one that loves Cyprus history lives within the Island of Cyprus, especially ex Veterans from the UK. We passed many historical buildings in our tour of duty, some buildings we did get to see inside off, but rarely told the History, so I miss your walks and in depth talks on your history trails, is there any way you can appeal again to a wider audience, Yours gratefully Bob Scott.
