President Mustafa Akıncı met with Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün and Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Serdar Denktaş yesterday (12th September), as part of a series of working meetings ahead of his official visit to New York.
In a statement following the meeting, Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün said that he informed President Akıncı about his views and priorities ahead of the President’s upcoming visit.
Özgürgün stated that they will closely follow the developments that emerge following Akıncı’s New York meetings.
Noting that Motherland Turkey had provided extensive support and encouragement to reach a settlement within the framework of the UN parameters, with clear determination and good intentions Özgürgün added that the Greek Cypriot side had, however, “made clear that they are not ready for a solution.”
Akıncı to visit İstanbul
President Mustafa Akıncı will travel to Istanbul this evening (13th September) to attend a conference jointly organized by the Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges and the Economic Development Foundation.
President Mustafa Akıncı will address business leaders in Turkey during his keynote speech on Thursday (14th September). Akıncı will evaluate the latest developments following negotiations with the Greek Cypriot side in Crans-Montana.
President Akıncı will return to the island on Thursday evening.
Separately, President Akıncı bade farewell to Slovakia’s Ambassador to Nicosia, Oksana Tomova, who is departing the island after reaching the end of her term in office.
Siber: “We expect the United Nations General Secretary’s report on Cyprus to be objective”
The Speaker of the Assembly, Sibel Siber, was received by President Mustafa Akıncı yesterday, to hold discussions ahead of the President’s forthcoming visit to New York. Speaking to press following the meeting, Siber said that they are waiting for the report of the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres to be released, adding that they hope this report will explain the present situation unequivocally.
Noting that the negotiating process takes place under the auspices of the United Nations Secretary General and other observers, Siber reiterated that the desired solution, which was based on the United Nations parameters, could not be reached.
Stating that the concrete facts in this regard were discussed by President Akıncı, political party leaders, independent observers and herself several times, Siber added that all parties in the meeting were in agreement that they would need to work hard to continue to uphold the Turkish Cypriots’ social existence in the world and push for the embargoes to be lifted.
Finally, the Speaker of the Assembly emphasised: “We expect the United Nations General Secretary’s report on Cyprus to be objective.”
