President Akıncı received Turkish Deputy Prime Minister and Responsible for Cyprus Affairs Recep Akdağ yesterday (28th August). During the meeting, he said that it has become clear that an open-ended process will not lead us to a solution. He also said that the 1960 agreement survived for three years, but that the Enosis [union with Greece] aspirations of Greek Cypriots brought separation and conflict to the island.
Akıncı stressed that although Turkish Cypriots voted “yes” and Greek Cypriots voted “no” in the 2004 referendum, the Greek Cypriot side became a member of the EU.
He added that neither Turkey nor the Turkish Cypriot side saw a positive approach by the Greek Cypriot side in Crans-Montana.
Akdağ: “Turkey will do its best to protect the rights of the Turkish Cypriot people”
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister and Responsible for Cyprus Affairs Recep Akdağ visited the TRNC for two days and held many official meetings.
During his official meetings with the TRNC’s government authorities, Akdağ said “Turkey will do its best as a guarantor country in Cyprus. The TRNC is strong and can stand alone with its deep-rooted traditions”.
Akdağ added that the UN and the whole world should put pressure on South Cyprus to fix its mistakes and stressed that Turkey, as a guarantor country, will always do its utmost to protect the rights of the Turkish Cypriots in the TRNC.
Özgürgün: “Not only Turkish Cypriots but also South Cyprus and other countries benefit from the peaceful atmosphere that Turkey brings to the region”
Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün received Turkish Deputy Prime Minister and Responsible for Cyprus Affairs Recep Akdağ yesterday.
Speaking after the meeting, Özgürgün said that not only Turkish Cypriots but also South Cyprus and countries in the region benefit from the peaceful atmosphere brought by Turkey, thanks to its strategic importance.
He also said that the TRNC is what it is today thanks to the support and mutual coordination with motherland Turkey and that thanks to the Turkish Armed Forces in Cyprus, there is peace on the island.
Özgürgün stressed that although the Turkish Cypriot side was willing to reach an agreement during the talks that have been ongoing for years, the TRNC “did not get the status it deserves at the UN and in the world”. He added that at the end of the talks in Switzerland, it was clear that the Greek Cypriot side was not willing to find a solution, saying that “their aim is to unite Cyprus with Greece”.
