President Mustafa Akıncı said, “We are trying to do our best for future generations, that’s why we are focused on our responsibilities. We are here to take the Turkish Cypriot people and our island to a better future in peace. I hope our determination to finding a solution is not unreciprocated”.

Akıncı, who is in Crans-Montana for the Cyprus conference, made a written statement yesterday.

In his statement, Akıncı said, “On 28 June 2017, two parallel groups began to work in Crans-Montana. We want this Cyprus Conference to be the final conference. That’s why we did not approve the proposal of the Greek Cypriot side to transfer some issues to the technical committees”. Akıncı also added that the decision to discuss important issues together as a package and solve them was made last Friday with the participation of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. “Within this framework, we are continuing to work on our initiatives  with our political parties, the Turkish Foreign Minister and his colleagues to reach an agreement based on bi-zonality, bi-communality and political equality of both sides” President Akıncı said.

Furthermore, Akıncı stressed the importance of this week and said that it will be of vital importance for Cyprus and the region.

As part of the preparatory work for the Cyprus conference, Akıncı met with Deputy Prime Minister and DP Leader Serdar Denktaş, Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu, political party leaders and deputies yesterday. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, CTP Leader Tufan Erhürman, TDP Leader Cemal Özyiğit, Deputies Armağan Candan and Zeki Çeler and Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu from the UBP also participated in the meeting.

Özgürgün: “Güzelyurt has been part of the Turkish territory since 1974, and it will continue to be Turkish territory”

During his inaugural speech at the Güzelyurt Orange Festival, Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün said that Turkish Cypriots will never give up on Turkey’s full and effective guarantee on the island.

Discussing the ongoing Cyprus talks and the Greek Cypriot leader Anastasiades’ statement saying that a solution will not be possible until Güzelyurt is returned, the Prime Minister said that the Greek Cypriot leader should never talk about Güzelyurt again and that many investments have been made there. “Güzelyurt has been part of the Turkish territory since 1974, and it will continue to be Turkish territory” Özgürgün added.

Underlining the fact that on the second day of the conference in Crans-Montana, it was shown that the Greek and Greek Cypriots’ real intentions were to deprive the Turkish Cypriot people from motherland Turkey’s guarantees, and that their stances never show the will to find a solution, Prime Minister Özgürgün said, “We will never give up on motherland Turkey’s full and effective guarantee on the island”.

Parties will present package proposals to the UN today

In a statement, the Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General said that in a “positive, results-oriented” meeting between Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the Heads of Delegation last Friday night, a clear understanding emerged on the essential elements of a package that could lead to a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus. Following Guterres’ initiative to make the ongoing Cyprus Conference in Crans-Montana a decision-oriented Conference  it was reported that at today’s five party meeting, five different package proposals will be submitted.

According to reports, the three guarantor countries (Turkey, Greece and the UK) will discuss Security and Guarantees on the basis of written proposals, and present to the UN.

The Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot sides will also hand their proposals to the UN on strategic issues that need to be resolved. The package proposals to be presented by the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot sides will consist of specific issues, including the “Security and Guarantees” chapters, to be addressed to reach a new federal partnership based on the equality of the two constituent states.
