I am delighted together with my colleague Qossay Eleyan to bring you an interesting report on “Discovering North Cyprus” about the Haydar Paşa Mosque which is historical
ly known as St. Catherine’s Cathedral and is in the neighbourhood Quarter or Mahalle of Lefkosa and was said to be named after one of the generals in command of the Ottoman army at the time of the Ottoman conquest of Nicosia.
The building was constructed in the 14th century, during the Frankish rule of the island, and named St. Catherine’s Church but with the conquest of Cyprus and Nicosia by the Ottomans in 1570, it was converted into a mosque.
This show will be transmitted on BRT2 on Monday 5th June at 19.00pm and repeated on Sunday 11th June at 12.20pm
