The Rotary Club of Kyrenia Cosmopolitan was delighted to welcome Mr Gunay Kibrit and Ms Sarem Ozdemir of the North Cyprus Orthopaedic Disability Association as Guest Speakers to the Club meeting on Saturday 27 May.

The Association began in 1982, and founded the Mehmet Reis Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Centre in 2004.  Located behind the Lefkosa State Hospital, this centre holds rehabilitation halls, patient treatment units, patient evaluation units, a psychotherapy unit, a cafeteria, a sport and exercise centre and an orthesis-prosthesis unit.  A functional capacity and work capacity assessment and evaluation unit, and a library are also available.

Since its establishment in January this year, the Rotary Club of Kyrenia Cosmopolitan has been actively collecting blue bottle tops in many bars and restaurants along the north coast to contribute towards the Association’s “Bottle tops for Wheelchairs” project.  Blue plastic bottle tops can be recycled, with the proceeds purchasing much-needed wheelchairs for the Association.

Rotarian Havva Ibrahimer teaches at TED College in Lefkosa and has successfully introduced the bottle top collection programme into the classrooms.  In just two months over 50,000 bottle tops have been collected by students there, not only encouraging the idea of helping others in the community but also raising environmental awareness.

On Saturday 27th May the Club was proud to present two wheelchairs to the Association on this occasion with more to come.

Rotary is a world-wide non-political, non-religious, and non-profit network of 1.2 million people from all different backgrounds who come together to make positive, lasting change in communities both at home and abroad.

Locally we support environmental projects including beach cleaning and replanting forests, the Vakif Food Bank, the Yesilyurt Special Needs School, Youth Entrepreneurship, and the ‘Cyprus Friendship Program’.

Our Club meets twice a month on a Saturday afternoon and conducts all meetings in English.

We believe everyone has skills and talents that can be put to good use within a Rotary Club to help the local community.  Please get in touch to chat about how you can be part of our projects.
