Introduction by Chris Elliott……..

With the election of a new committee for the British Residents’ Society, it seems a lot is changing within BRS and they have reached out to cyprusscene and requested our help to publish their news with our worldwide readership.

We are delighted to have this opportunity to help them and show below a nice report by BRS when a party of members visited a number of locations in southern Cyprus, which I have also visited, so I can imagine the great time they had on their two day visit.

The BRS is pleased to report a recent and very successful cultural tour of Paphos and the surrounding area. This was the first event to take place since the election of the new committee. It was led by the new Events’ Organiser, Tina King, supported by BRS members Sandie Mansell and Mike Diplock and professionally guided by Yusuf Nidai and Georgia Constanti.

The two-day event began by a visit to Pano Lefkara where the vernacular architecture was enhanced by the beautiful spring blossoms and where the group was able to spend time with a local family, the Rouvis, who have made some of the finest embroidery and silver art work to be found. On this day, we were also privileged to visit the historical Church of the Holy Cross, the Lemessos Medieval Museum of Cyprus, to view the mosaics at Dionysus House and to witness the birthplace of Aphrodite at Petra Tou Romiou. Later, we explored Paphos Harbour, so attractive in the evening light.

BRS members enjoying their visit to Kourion

The second day of this adventure was a cultural treat with visits to the Tombs of the Kings in Paphos, the archaeological site of Kourion with its beautiful mosaics and amphitheater and to St.Neophytos Monastery before a leisurely lunch on the beach at Coral Bay.

Judging by the flood of responses, this tour was appreciated and enjoyed by those who took part and BRS look forward to offering its members many more trips and events in the coming year.

We invite you to check our website and your emails frequently for upcoming short trips and also for some further afield such as future plans to visit the Trabzon area by the Black Sea, Istanbul and Cappadocia. And while we have your attention, do not forget to make a date for a much loved favourite, the annual Summer Ball to be held at the Merit Hotel on 10th September.
