Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu stated that the main obstacle on the island and in the Cyprus talks was the Greek Cypriot Side’s rejection of the Turkish Cypriots as their equal partners and co-owners of the island.
Speaking at a panel event entitled “Turkish-American Strategic Cooperation: Looking at the Future” organized by the Turkish Heritage Organization (THO) at the National Press Club in Washington, Minister Çavuşoğlu touched upon the Cyprus issue and stated that an opportunity had been missed during the 2004 Annan Plan referendum, and warning that the same mistake cannot be made during this current and final window of opportunity. Minister Çavuşoğlu also noted that he expects the Greek Cypriot side to do their part in order not to miss this opportunity.
In his speech, Çavuşoğlu emphasized that the solution will be a very important step to transforming the Eastern Mediterranean into a peaceful, stable and prosperous region.
