Akıncı: “Our efforts to find a solution will continue”
President Mustafa Akıncı stated that his government has not abandoned efforts to reach a solution in spite of the deadlock in negotiations. He reiterated that his attempts to reach an agreement continue.
Akıncı also stressed that the government has no intention of giving away their share of any possible partnership state.
In his Medicine Day speech on 14th March, Akıncı said that this is the first step towards signing an agreement and that what is most important is that the agreement is maintained. “We do not want the events of 1963 to happen again. Surely, is there a connection between a culture of peace, federal culture, empathy and teaching Enosis in schools? We want the Greek Cypriot side to correct their mistake. I think that they will find a way to do this and that there are some opportunities in this direction,” Akıncı stressed.
Furthermore, Akıncı added that he has obtained authority from his people to reach a bi-communal, bi-zonal solution based on political equality and that efforts towards resolving the issue will continue in this vein.
Akıncı will meet today with Espen Barth Eide, Special Advisor to the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus.
The meeting will be held at the President’s residence. Eide will also meet with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiades today.
Çavuşoğlu: “We have seen the true intentions of the Greek Cypriot side and Greece”
Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has stated that he has seen the true intentions of the Greek Cypriot side and Greece regarding the Cyprus issue.
In his speech at Trakya Balkan STK Platform in Edirne, Çavuşoğlu touched upon the Cyprus issue. “As the negotiations continue, the Greek Cypriot Parliament has approved the commemoration of Enosis which means the annexation of Cyprus to Greece. Apparently, they would like a solution and the parameters and criteria for any settlement are clear … Bi-zonality, political equality and two constituent states…On the other hand, they are afraid that Turkey and the TRNC will find other alternatives. As far as Turkey is concerned, we have supported the process for a settlement thus far but if you do not wish to come to a settlement, we can find other alternatives,” said Minister Çavuşoğlu.
Rüya Taner to give a recital in London
Turkish Cypriot pianist Rüya Taner will give a recital today at Steinway Hall at the invitation of “Steinway & Sons” piano company in London.
During her student years in London, Rüya Taner became a “Steinway & Sons” artist by winning the first prize in their Mozart and Liszt competitions.
