Özgürgün: “Turkey’s full and effective guarantee is necessary”

Speaking at the “Discover North Cyprus” event, Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün emphasized that the full and effective guarantee of Turkey is necessary.

90% of the Turkish Cypriot people support the full and effective guarantee of Turkish Armed Forces and Turkey, Özgürgün said, and added that a strong and viable agreement based on the political equality of two states can only be reached on the basis of Turkey’s full guarantee.

Özgürgün warned that if the Greek Cypriot side and Greek Foreign Minister maintain their stance that “the solution for us is a solution in which no Turkish flag waves,” a solution would never be possible.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım: “We reiterated our determination to find a solution once again with our attitude in Geneva”

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım stated that Turkey’s determination to finding a just, comprehensive and viable solution to the Cyprus issue was reiterated by their attitude at the Cyprus conference in Geneva.

The Press Centre of the Turkish Prime Ministry made a brief statement following the meeting of the Prime Minister Yıldırım with the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Advisor Espen Barth Eide.

Prime Minister Yıldırım reiterated Turkey’s determination to finding a just and viable solution to the Cyprus issue, Turkish Prime Ministry’s press office said.

Prime Minister Yıldırım stated that they will continue to support the process constructively and added that they hoped to see progress in February regarding the ongoing negotiations in Cyprus. Yıldırım also pointed out the importance of security and maintaining an equilibrium on the island.

Eide, for his part, stated that the UN is making every effort to reach a conclusion on the ongoing negotiations and added that the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres closely follows and supports the process.

Eide also met with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and exchanged views on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and the next steps.

Akıncı and Anastasiades to meet tomorrow

President Mustafa Akıncı and the Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Anastasiades will meet at the building reserved by the UN for the negotiations at the buffer zone at 11.00 tomorrow, in order to continue their talks for a Cyprus settlement.

The last Leaders’ meeting was held on 1 February and the two Leaders requested the UN to facilitate the continuation of the Cyprus conference.

Fascist Greek Cypriots attacked Turkish Cypriots’ cars

It has been reported that the vehicles of five Turkish Cypriots, who went to Troodos for a holiday, were attacked by Greek Cypriot extremists. The tyres of the Turkish Cypriot vehicles were cut with a knife and the vehicle bodies were damaged.

Reports of attacks by far-right extremists against Turkish Cypriots have increased in recent months, with this attack on tourists in Troodos the latest of a number of incidents. It is understood that the Turkish Cypriots alerted the hotel management first and registered a complaint with the Greek Cypriot police.
