Kurtulmuş: “Turkey has red-lines in the Cyprus negotiations regarding territory and its guarantee”

Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey Numan Kurtulmuş has made the following statement in a live broadcast to AA regarding the Cyprus negotiations in Geneva:

“Revealing an unacceptable map at the last minute, and also leaking this to the press after it was submitted to the UN, cannot be tolerated by Turkey. It was agreed that both sides’ maps would not be revealed. A fait accompli policy has been carried out here and Turkey will not accept this.”

Kurtulmş stated that from the beginning, Turkey has always supported a solution in Cyprus. “We have some red-lines in the Cyprus negotiations. Turkey will never make a concession on territory. The other important point is Turkey’s guarantee.  The biggest guarantor in the formation of a bi-zonal Cyprus is the existence of Turkey. Turkey will never give up on this right. Negotiations are continuing with this in mind. However, we will never leave the negotiating table with concessions that cannot be accepted.”

Johnson: “After many decades of paralysis we might be seeing a solution”

Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Boris Johnson made a statement regarding the Cyprus negotiations before meeting with the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels.

“This morning I’ll be raising the conversations we’ve had about Cyprus in Geneva over the last few days and talking about some of the leadership that has been shown by both the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.”

“I don’t want to oversell this but there’s a certain amount of optimism that after many decades of paralysis we might be seeing a solution there.”
