Akıncı to receive leaders and representatives of the Turkish Cypriot political parties

Today, President Mustafa Akıncı will receive the leaders and representatives of the political parties represented in the TRNC Assembly.

Meanwhile tonight, Akıncı will take part in a television programme jointly organised by the Turkish Cypriot television networks, in which he will inform the public about the developments in the negotiations which have been continuing for 17 months. Akıncı will also discuss the Leaders’ meetings which are to be held in Switzerland between 7-11 November.

During the last Leaders’ meeting in the presence of the UN, President Akıncı proposed to make a joint press conference with the Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Anastasiades before the negotiations in Switzerland, but Anastasiades opted to hold a separate press conference.

Çelik: “The Guarantees issue is a matter that is indisputable for Turkey”

The Turkish Minister for European Union Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik stated that the Guarantees issue is a matter that is indisputable for Turkey in the Cyprus settlement process.

As part of a visit to the Greek capital Athens, Çelik held a press conference and said that Turkey has always held a constructive attitude in relation to the Cyprus issue.

He added that progress has been made on the issues which have been discussed, namely the European Union matters and Territorial Adjustments.

The Security and Guarantees issue will ultimately be discussed in a five-party meeting together with the guarantor countries, he said.

Furthermore, Çelik stated that it is obvious that so far, the negotiation process is being carried out in a very positive manner by all three sides, including the UN.

Çavuşoğlu: “I hope talks in Switzerland will contribute to a settlement in Cyprus”

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu expressed his hope that the talks in Switzerland will contribute to a settlement in Cyprus.

Çavuşoğlu paid a visit to the Swiss capital, Bern, upon the invitation of his counterpart Didier Burkhalter, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. Speaking at the joint press conference, Çavuşoğlu expressed that he appreciates Switzerland’s efforts to host the meeting in an objective and balanced way, in the face of international pressure.

Switzerland is hosting most of the meetings for the Cypriot talks due to its unbiased attitude, Çavuşoğlu said. The talks are due to start next week.

“I hope the talks in Switzerland provide an excellent opportunity for a settlement in Cyprus” said Çavuşoğlu.
