Burcu: “Issues that have not yet been agreed will be discussed in Switzerland”

Presidential Spokesperson Barış Burcu stated that the issues that have not yet been agreed will be discussed first in Switzerland.

The territory issue will be discussed depending on the criteria agreed for discussion.

Burcu added that if a consensus is reached on the criteria, the map issue would be on the table, on the condition of determining a date for the five-party conference.

In his written statement, Burcu also noted that misleading statements by the Greek Cypriot Government Spokesperson, Nicos Christodoulides, are still continuing.

Leaders’ wives met

President Mustafa Akıncı’s wife, Meral Akıncı, and Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Anastasiades’ wife, Andri Anastasiades, met yesterday.

The leaders’ wives met in the buffer zone at the official residence of the new UN Secretary-General`s Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) Elizabeth Spehar, upon her invitation.

During the meeting, it was discussed how the wives of the leaders can contribute to the solution process.

Germany’s Ambassador to South Cyprus Nikolai von Schoepff visited the EU Coordination Centre

Germany’s Ambassador to South Cyprus Nikolai von Schoepff visited the Prime Ministry EU Coordination Centre.

During his visit, Schoepff watched the presentation about the works of the EU Coordination Centre.

The President of the EU Coordination Centre Kudret Akay stated that financial aid should be increased, emphasizing that the TRNC’s economy could be assisted by arrangements regarding the Green Line Regulation.

Schoepff and Akay agreed to continue to work together as part of a positive and beneficial relationship.

Harmancı, Yorkadjis and Spehar met

Lefkoşa Turkish Municipality Mayor Mehmet Harmancı and Greek Cypriot Mayor of Nicosia Constantinos Yiorkadjis met with the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative to Cyprus Elizabeth Spehar.

The meeting was held at the Cooperation House at the buffer zone upon the invitation of the UN Special Representative Spehar.

At the meeting, Spehar spoke to the two mayors about the latest stage of the negotiations on the Cyprus problem.

The Mayors also informed Spehar about the ongoing projects in Lefkoşa and emphasized that projects which benefit citizens’ lives should be supported.

In his statement regarding the meeting, Harmancı said:

“If we are moving towards a comprehensive settlement, local administrations will be most affected by this. While the Leaders are reaching a conclusion, as the local administrators, we should act with awareness of our role in this new structure.”

School trips to the graves of EOKA members and gallows areas to be organised for Greek Cypriot children

Upon the advice of Lida Kursumba, the Commissar for the Protection of the Greek Cypriot Childrens’ Rights, the decision regarding organising school trips to the graves of EOKA members and gallows areas should be reconsidered due to the children being negatively affected.

The Greek Cypriot Education Minister Kostas Kadis declared that these school trips would continue.

According to Alithia, a Greek Cypriot newspaper, Kadis stated that the Greek Cypriot Ministry of Education has no intention of cancelling these trips despite Kursumba’s advice.
