Özgürgün attended the Democracy and Martyrs Rally in Istanbul

Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün attended a ‘Democracy and Martyrs’ Rally at the Yenikapı parade ground in Istanbul yesterday (Sunday 7th August).

Prime Minister Özgürgün, who attended the meeting upon the invitation of the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, spoke at the Rally along with the Turkish Prime Minister and AK Party Leader Binali Yıldırım, CHP Leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and MHP Leader Devlet Bahçeli.

The Rally was held under the auspices of the Turkish Presidency and with the support of the Governorship of İstanbul and the Municipality of İstanbul.

Prime Minister Özgürgün will return to the Island this evening.

The Erenköy Resistance and the martyrs who lost their lives during the resistance will be remembered with a ceremony in Erenköy today (8th August).

The Greek Cypriot Administration announced that they had removed the previously stated restrictions on the border crossings. This move came after the continual calls and efforts from the TRNC Presidential and Foreign Ministry officials.

In his ceremonial message, Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün stated that the Erenköy Resistance demonstrates that the Turkish Cypriot people will never give up and will always seek to protect their homeland, even in the face of extreme adversity. He further said that “We will exist on this land forever, with the strength and support from our Motherland, and will continue to move forward for the welfare and happiness of our people.”

The TRNC former President Eroğlu stated that “A legend was born in Erenköy. Turkish Cypriots resisted in dire circumstances in every way possible. We owe it to the martyrs to uphold their memories and strengthen the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.”

Democracy Rally in Lefkoşa following the attempted coup in Turkey

A democracy rally took place in Lefkoşa on Friday 5th August following the attempted coup in Turkey which took place on the 15 July 2016.

Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün, Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Denktaş and Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey Tuğrul Türkeş all attended the democracy rally.

In total, 132 organizations and institutions – including associations, universities, municipalities, political parties, companies and unions – gave their support to the meeting.

Speaking at the meeting, Prime Minister Özgürgün thanked people for attending and expressed his pride for the Turkish Cypriot people.

Mr Özgürgün recalled Greek coup of 15 July 1974 and the struggles of the Turkish Cypriot people for many years, adding that the TRNC is now a sovereign State and with the support of motherland Turkey, its people say “yes” to democracy.

In his speech, the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey Tuğrul Türkeş conveyed the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s message, and also expressed his desire for the Cyprus negotiations to end in a positive way.

The Prime Minister of Turkey Binali Yıldırım also attended the rally via teleconference and thanked the Turkish Cypriot people who attended the rally.

“Cyprus Carob Molasses” registered

On 6 August, the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry registered “Cyprus Carob Molasses” as a product of protected geographical indication and traditional specialty in the TRNC.

The move follows the registration of the traditional alcoholic drink “zivania” or “zivaniya” and “hellim” or “halloumi” cheese.

Speaking at a press conference, the Chairman of the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry Ali Çıralı stressed that they are continuing their efforts to register olive oil, çakıstes olives (crushed olives which are harvested when green), şeftali kebab, samarella, talar cheese and walnut paste as products of protected origin.
