Akıncı received Spehar

President Mustafa Akıncı received Elizabeth Spehar who has been appointed as the new UN Secretary-General`s Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

Turkish Cypriot Negotiator Özdil Nami and Presidential Spokesperson Barış Burcu were also present at the meeting which was held at the President’s office.

In her statement following the meeting with President Akıncı, Elizabeth Spehar said that she had a very fruitful meeting with President Akıncı and added that Akıncı updated her regarding the Cyprus negotiation process.

Spehar said: “I am honoured to be on the island again and to undertake a role in supporting the two leaders”.

Spehar also met with the Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiades yesterday.

In her statement following the meeting with Anastasiades, Elizabeth Spehar pointed out that both leaders seemed dedicated to reaching a settlement and she was optimistic about the negotiation process in Cyprus.

Spehar also served as the Head of the UN Mission (UNFICYP) for two months in 2008.

“Cyprus problem should be solved in 2016”

Ban ki-Moon

At a recent meeting this week between United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, the Cyprus issue was discussed, where it was stressed that the Cyprus problem could be solved in 2016.

  1. Wow a woman doing such an important job how will they ever get over that one! I find the attitude to women is terrible in Northern Cyprus – so many are badly treated.
