Personal review of the North Cyprus Cancer Charity Trust coffee morning 14th June 2016

KathyBy Kathy Martin…

Tuesday 14th June 2016 I was invited to join my friends Cansev Korcil and Levanta Gursen to attend the North Cyprus Cancer Trust (NCCCT) coffee morning at the Merit Royal Premium Hotel in Alsancak, on the west side of Girne/Kyrenia, not somewhere I frequent as usual, so took the opportunity to expand my area of knowledge.

Alistair and I had spent a few months exploring the west side of Girne/Kyrenia when we arrived and decided that there was little to attract us that side that we couldn’t find on our east side! Also, my little Suzuki, is not happy travelling long distances, so tend to stay on the east side (in my safety zone!).

We were joined by another very good Facebook friend, Margaret Lonergan. The NCCCT organisers were delighted with the turn-out. Later, I read their report on Cyprus Scene (see link below) that 170 people attended and that they raised a fabulous 4,500tl! Boosted by a donation from Margaret Keenan, of 1,000tl, from the NCCCT bingo sessions at The Lodge in Çatalköy.

Merit Royal Premium Hotel in Alsancak had done the NCCCT proud laying on a splendiferous feast! This was NCCCT’s last coffee morning of the season! Entrance cost just 10TL and included refreshments. There were stalls selling citronella candles, solar lights, local souvenirs, jewellery, cards, and much more.

3 Merit groupAs usual, there were plenty of bargains on their charity stall, and, of course, the infamous raffle. There was an additional money raising scheme, tickets were sold for 5tl each with half the proceeds going to NCCCT and half to the winner. Great excitement at our table, as we realised that Levanta Gursen had won the money!

The coffee mornings are taking a summer break until October, but their second-hand shops in Girne/Kyrenia (Heartbeat and the Hut, which is behind the post office) will remain open.

All the money raised will be used to purchase equipment for the state hospitals in North Cyprus.
