Eide: “Both leaders are decisive to find a solution to the Cyprus problem in 2016”
Received by President Mustafa Akıncı yesterday, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide stated that a constructive and comprehensive meeting was held with President Akıncı and the Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiades respectively. Eide said that he observed both leaders are decisive in finding a solution to the Cyprus problem in 2016, adding that both leaders also agreed that there is no more time to be lost and the next weeks should be planned in the most efficient manner.
Stating that in today’s meeting he will assess the current situation in negotiations in general and what has been achieved in the last year, Eide said that undecided issues should be determined in order to discuss them at the highest level.
Indicating that plenty of progress has been reached at the negotiations, however more work needs to be done, Eide said that the Leaders clearly reflected their determination for a solution, they have a document consisting of hundreds of pages and convergences are written in black.
Anastasiades asks Eide to put down on paper the convergences and mutual understandings
Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Anastasiades has asked UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide to put down on paper the convergences and mutual understandings achieved so far and the differences which remain between the two sides in the ongoing UN- led Cyprus reunification talks.
In statements after having received Eide, Anastasiades said that he had asked to be put in writing “what the convergences are, in what matters there is a mutual understanding and which are the matters on which differences remain.” This way, he explained, “all involved parties will have an objective knowledge as to which direction they should take when speaking either for progress or for the conditions for progress to be achieved.” Asked whether the goal remains to reach a solution within 2016, Anastasiades said “this will depend on the parties,” adding that “I don`t just mean a positive disposition but also whether what has been agreed as a basis for a real federal solution is what is meant, without the inclusion of co-federal elements.”
Leaders to meet today
President Mustafa Akıncı and the Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiades will meet again today within the framework of Cyprus negotiations. The meeting will be held at the building allocated by the UN for the negotiations in the buffer zone.
Greek Cypriots in the US think a solution in 2016 is baseless
Greek Cypriots and Greeks living in the US, think a solution of the Cyprus problem in 2016 is baseless. Hellene-American Leadership Council (HALC) CEO Andy Zemenidis said, “There is no commitment that the US Government would finance the settlement, therefore expectations for the solution of the Cyprus problem in 2016 is baseless.”
According to the report of the Greek Cypriot newspaper Simerini, Zemenidis said, “The US Government says that they will find ways to contribute to the reunification, but there is no indication about the amount of the contribution that they will make except discourses and this indicates that a solution up to November 2016 is totally unrealistic. The US Congress will be closed in October 2016.”
Martyr Lieutenant Caner Gönyeli 2016 Search and Rescue Exercise was carried out
The land phase of the Martyr Lieutenant Caner Gönyeli 2016 Search and Rescue Exercise was carried out in the region of Girne St.Hilarion (101 Houses).
In his speech at the exercise area, Major General Erhan Uzun stated that the search and rescue authority is valid in TRNC air space and territorial waters, including international waters; Erenköy and Güzelyurt in the west, Gazimagusa in the east, and the northern part of the TRNC and the Republic of Turkey air space.
Major General Uzun said that the main aim of the exercise is to develop search and rescue elements, to improve coordination and cooperation procedures, to train search and rescue personnel, to test capabilities and to test Turkey’s and TRNC’s capabilities in humanitarian relief operations and cooperation.
The exercise, which is performed in commemoration of Turkish Cypriot Lieutenant Caner Gönyeli who lost his life during the Turkish Peace Operation, was conducted with land and sea phases on the basis of three scenarios.
