Negotiations to start again on 8 June

In their statement following the bi-communal event organised by the Technical Committee of Education at the Home of Cooperation, in the UN-controlled buffer zone, President Mustafa Akıncı and the Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiades announced that the negotiations will start again on 8 June.

In his statement, President Akıncı said: “We will meet again on Wednesday, the 8th of June. This children’s event ensured the resumption of the negotiations.

Responding to the questions regarding the proposal of the Greek Cypriot Administration to the European Council concerning Greek Cypriot properties in the TRNC, President Akıncı said that necessary evaluations were done.

Moreover, Akıncı said that while the negotiation process continues, it is not right to experience such events at the European Court of Human Rights, adding that a solution of Cyprus problem will be at the table, not at the court corridors.

Akıncı: “Differences are not obstacles for living together in peace”

Stating that differences are not obstacles for living together in peace, having different language, religion and culture is the richness, President Akıncı said that the important thing is to be able to solve the problem with love and in a peaceful way.

President Akıncı and the Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiades came together at the Home for Cooperation in the buffer zone at an event organized by the bi-communal Technical Committee on Education in respect of the World Children Day.

Speaking at the event, President Akıncı said “Sometimes adults have difficulty in communicating with each other but children can do this so easily. Even if some of you live in South Cyprus and some live in North Cyprus, Cyprus is your common country. Although we sometimes face problems, with my friend Nikos from time to time, we are here to create the conditions for you to come together more often. Our whole effort lies in leaving you a legacy where you can live in this country in peace, happiness and prosperity. We are aiming for a united, federal Cyprus which will be the most beautiful country, an example, where you will work in peace, freedom, equality and security. You have the right to live in such a country”.

In his speech, Anastasiades said: “Our country which is the common country for all, must give you the opportunity, through peace, to create together, to have a prospect and a future, and this is the obligation both on my shoulders and those of my friend Mustafa”.

Özgürgün: “Religious ceremonies of Greek Cypriots increased in the last three years”

Stating that the religious ceremonies of the Greek Cypriots held at the churches in the TRNC have increased in the last three years and there is some proof that these religious ceremonies had been politicized, Prime Minister Özgürgün said that the permit procedure for the religious ceremonies was revised and 4 criteria have been determined by consulting with President Mustafa Akıncı.

Responding to the questions on the agenda, Prime Minister Özgürgün said that with 200 religious ceremonies in a year it means that security needs to be arranged for these ceremonies.

  1. I find it unbelievable that it’s talk, talk, talk why after all this time can’t they come to a solution, yes the North want it I am not convinced the South do….YET!
