Demining opens way for

Lefka and Dherynia crossings

Border TRNC_2The demining process in Lefka village, where a crossing point is expected to open, has been completed by the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) an the clearance report given to the  bicommunal Technical Committee on the Opening of Crossing Points.

UNMAS has also made sure that there are no mines in Dherynia, where another crossing point is also going to open, CNA reported on Thursday.

The clearance now gives the green light for technical work to begin for the opening of the crossing points. The work involves the construction, widening and expansion of roads after discussion at the technical committee.

Meanwhile, the Greek Cypriot side insists that talks be held before the opening of two more crossings, one on the old Aglandjia-Athienou road, and one in Tylliria, and is awaiting a reply from the Turkish Cypriot side to its proposals. A source told CNA that the opening of these crossings would facilitate road transport.
